UFC president Dana White always tells fighters they need to make a statement if they want to earn a title shot. Johny Hendricks did that Saturday night in the co-main event of UFC 154: St-Pierre vs. Condit.
Hendricks threw a right and landed a left, knocking Martin Kampmann out and securing his fifth consecutive victory. “Bigg Rigg” made his case, and proceeded to ask for a shot at the UFC welterweight title.
“Please, please give me a shot at the belt,” Hendricks said. “It feels great. Martin Kampmann is a tough dude, I’ve trained with him before and I knew he had a chance to beat me.”
Hendricks (14-1) wasted no time, storming right out after Kampmann and landing several quick lefts. Just seconds later, the former Oklahoma State University wrestling standout finished “The Hitman.”
“I just started hitting that combo a week ago,” Hendricks said, of the knockout shot. “It came to me in a dream, and it turns out it works.”
