With the UFC fresh off their debut in China, a new partnership with Media Nusantara Citra (MNC) will now introduce Indonesia to the growing sport of MMA. MNC is a major media provider serving Indonesia the last 15 years.
“It’s going to bring us on terrestrial TV and on their MNC Sports cable stations across the world’s fourth-most populous country,” said Mark Fischer, UFC executive vice president and managing director of UFC Asia. “So we’re really excited about that for our future in this great potential market.”
Indonesia will mark the UFC’s third go-ahead into the Asian market. Besides the China card over the weekend, the UFC returned to Japan earlier this year. Cung Le (9-2) defeated Rich Franklin (29-7-1 NC) in round one on the China card and Benson Henderson (17-2) defeated Frankie Edgar (14-3-1) to win the lightweight championship on the Japan card. The UFC is expected to return to Japan in the first quarter of 2013 for another live event.
Rudy Tanoesoedibjo, CEO of MNC’s SkyVision, believes that not only will Indonesia make strides in Indonesia, but hopes some live events are in their future too.
“Indonesia is the third country in Asia after Japan and China to bring the UFC, and we’re going to be organizing fights in Indonesia,” said Tanoesoedibjo. “I believe with us as the fourth most populous country in the world, this can be a very big event in our country.”
A more formal announcement is expected in the coming weeks.
