Cesar Gracie: Nate Diaz Vs. Gilbert Melendez Will Never Happen

If the UFC decides to bring the current Strikeforce Lightweight Champion Gilbert Melendez (21-2) over, there will be no fighting between teammates, according to Cesar Gracie. That means a possible a fight with Nate Diaz (16-7) is off the table. Both fighters currently train out of Cesar Gracie Jiu-Jitsu.

“If Nate’s champ Gilbert won’t fight him,” said Gracie on Fight Hub. “If Gilbert is champ Nate won’t fight him. It’s like as long as you can hold on to that championship, it’s yours.”

Melendez has been the champion twice for Strikeforce since winning the title in 2006. He is currently injured and expected to return to Strikeforce next year. Diaz will be looking to capture the UFC’s lightweight championship in December when he takes on Ben Henderson (17-2).

If the two find themselves competing for the UFC, Gracie said both will remain as lightweights. He continued that the UFC roster will have to deal with what he calls a “two headed monster.”

“They’re not going to fight and that’s how we are,” said Gracie.
