Daniel Cormier saw fighting Frank Mir as the perfect opportunity to make an impact. Mir is a former UFC champion, and was coming off a loss to current UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos.
However, Mir suffered an injury and was forced out of the planned November encounter. Now, Cormier remains in the dark, awaiting news on who he will face next.
“I’ve heard that Fabricio Werdum stepped up and said that he would fight; Pat Barry said he wanted the fight, even Roy Nelson,” said Cormier, during a recent interview with ESPN. “There are guys who want to fight, it’s a big fight, but it’s also a matter of how big a fight they want to get in terms of title-shot implications.”
Cormier is expected to enter the ranks of the UFC after his bout in Strikeforce, which officials confirmed is still slated to take place in November. Still, not being able to face Mir does leave a sour taste in the mouth of the former Olympian.
“I kind of look at the big picture on a lot of things, so looking at the big picture and what that fight could have done for me in terms of visibility, the advancement of my career,” Cormier said, “it was disappointed. But I have to be focused on whoever they put in front of me.”
