It’s been quite sometime since Georges St-Pierre (22-2) has stepped into the Octagon as a fighter. When he does return at UFC 154, it will have been over 18 months since he last defend his welterweight championship. He has been out of action with ACL injury to his knee.
It was at the end of August when St-Pierre confirmed he was given the all clear to fight again and that his first challenge upon returning would be 10 weeks later against Carlos Condit (28-5). St-Pierre said he’s been training in preparation for his return and ring rust wasn’t something he was going to be able to focus on.
“Unfortunately, I won’t be able to avoid it too much because I haven’t fought for a while,” said St-Pierre on Sherdog. “There’s nothing like fighting.”
Condit won the interim welterweight championship in February of this year and has waited for St-Pierre to return so they can unify the titles. St-Pierre sees his time away from active competition on par with Condit’s time off.
“The good thing is Carlos hasn’t fought for a long time too,” said St-Pierre. “He fought Nick Diaz almost a year [ago]. For me, it will be a year and half, for him almost a year. We’re going to be close.”
