Tim Sylvia seemed like the man set to face Daniel Cormier in his final Strikeforce appearance later this year. However, before the contract could be signed, Frank Mir was named the opponent.
While some have said that Sylvia was never going to be the fighter standing across from Cormier, the former Olympian himself has stated that isn’t the case. No date for Cormier-Mir has been announced by the fight promotion yet.
“We had talked about Sylvia. There weren’t many guys out there who we considered,” said Cormier, during a recent appearance on BJPenn.com Radio. “His name was floating around, but I never got the idea that it was set in stone. Tim isn’t making any of this up; he was one of the last guys who were in the running.”
Sylvia competed this past weekend at ONE FC 5 against Andrei Arlovski. The bout was ended after illegal strikes to the head of Sylvia, resulting in a no-contest between the former UFC heavyweight champions.
“I can’t remember who some of the other guys who were being considered,” Cormier said. “I believe a fight with me is a fight that any elite heavyweight should want right now.”
