Last Fighter To Defeat Renan Barão Recalls The Fight

In Renan Barão’s (29-1-1 NC) debut in 2005, he lost to Joao Paulo Rodrigues de Souza (34-14) via unanimous decision. Since then he has won his last 29 fights, and after four wins in the UFC, became their interim bantamweight champion at UFC 149.

Now Souza looks back at the fight and remembers how much he enjoyed being the only one to put a blemish on a nearly perfect record.

“The fight was awesome,” said Souza to TATAME. “There was no such thing as long studying from both parts.”

Since the fight was seven years ago, Barão believes he was the better man that night since he was award the victory.

“I guess it was a fair outcome,” said Souza. “All fighters believe they did better, but the judges decided in my favor.”

Souza is glad that he was the first, and to date only person, to defeat Barão as people will remember it. He is also pleased that a fellow Brazilian was the one to hand him his first taste of defeat.

“This win was great for me and my team,” said Souza. “It was really good because he’s always gonna have a lot of wins and one loss. But people will wonder who this loss was to. It does sound good to me and Brazil because he didn’t lose to a foreigner.”

Souza remains active, last fighting to a draw in June of this year.
