Chael Sonnen may be upset Jon Jones refused him a title shot, but even The American Gangster feels the UFC 151 cancellation is much bigger than him. The former middleweight caught up with FUEL TV to talk about Jones’ “selfish” decision.
“I have friends on the card. I have fighters who are scratching and clawing their way through the undercards and the prelims, even the main card guys. Their whole future depends on the check they were going to earn for doing their job next week,” explained Sonnen. “That’s all been taken away from them because one selfish brat didn’t want to go in there and fight. I just don’t understand it.”
In this case, Sonnen has backed up his talk, accepting to fight Jones anywhere at anytime on just eight days notice. But Sonnen is far from the only one to call out Jones of late with fans, fighters and a very outspoken Dana White all criticizing the Light Heavyweight titleholder.
The decision to withdraw from the bout also comes on the heels of Jones’ Nike signing which has added fuel to the fire. At the top of his career, Jones’ can take the financial hit of not fighting immediately, a luxury some of the other fighters on the card cannot afford.
“He’s with Nike. Nike should change their motto with Jones Jones to just do nothing,” closed Sonnen.
