Bellator is debating having an interim featherweight championship fight between Daniel Straus (20-4) and Patricio Freire (17-1). The current champion, Pat Curran (17-4), remains inactive until early 2013.
“Pat told me the doctor told it’d probably be two months before he can start doing any kind of training,” said Bjorn Rebney to MMA Junkie. “So we’re probably looking at the beginning of November before he can get back in the gym.”
Freire is the No. 1 contender, but has been on the shelf with a broken hand for over a year. Straus has won six of his seven Bellator fights and is on a four fight win streak.
“We’re thinking about it right now,” said Rebney. “But what it really boils down to is how quickly Pat will heal. If Pat heals quicker, we’ll still keep ‘Pitbull’ on hold for that title shot. If he doesn’t, we might go in a different direction. But we haven’t made a final decision yet.”
