As the UFC scrabbled to find a replacement to fight light heavyweight champion Jon Jones (16-1), the man he defeated for the title Maurício ‘Shogun’ Rua (21-6) was approached. Rua declined the fight as he wanted more than eight days to prepare.
Julio Heller, Rua’s manager, explained that Lorenzo Fertitta called and needed an answer within 10 minutes.
“I hung up and Mauricio was there with me,” said Heller. “We talked and called Dida in Curitiba and we got to a conclusion we should accept the rematch, but only if Shogun had a couple of months to train and it would mean a fight later in October or in November. I said that to Lorenzo but he said there was no time because Jon Jones’s fight is on September 22nd. Unfortunately, he couldn’t give us this time but he understood.”
Heller went on that they needed a two or three month training camp to properly prepare for a potential fight. He continued that Rua’s opportunity to regain the championship would happen.
Rua returns to the Octagon for UFC on FOX 5 against Alexander Gustafsson (14-1).
