It’s been rumored that the Strikeforce middleweight No. 1 contender spot could be decided Saturday night at Strikeforce: Rousey vs. Kaufman. Now, Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker has made it official.
Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza, a former champion in the division, will face Derek Brunson in the co-main event on Showtime from San Diego. Souza has been looking to get back in the title picture since dropping the belt to current champ Luke Rockhold last year.
“Luke Rockhold, our champion, has made it very clear he’d like to fight ‘Jacare,’” said Coker, during an interview with MMAjunkie.com. “This is a tough fight for ‘Jacare,’ and if he can get through Brunson, that’s a fight we would probably like to make happen.”
Rockhold scored a decision victory vs. Souza, and has since defended the belt twice. Souza is 15-3 in his career, including wins in five of his six Strikeforce bouts. Brunson, meanwhile, holds an overall mark of 9-1 and is 3-0 in Strikeforce.
As a reminder, FightLine will have complete coverage of Saturday’s card beginning with the prelims on Showtime Extreme.
