Patricio Freire wants nothing more than to face Pat Curran for the Bellator featherweight title. However, Curran is now out with an injury, leaving Freire awaiting word on a possible replacement.
Curran and Freire were expected to be the main event for Bellator 73 next Friday night, but Curran suffered a fractured orbital bone and will not be able to fight.
Freire (17-1) hasn’t fought since securing his shot at the belt in May of 2011. So, he would like to remain active, and even has a potential replacement for Curran in mind.
“I just heard (Joe Warren) was at the Olympics as a sparring partner,” Freire posted on Twitter. “He must be in shape and ready. Please make it happen now.”
Warren, who attempted to make the U.S. Olympic wrestling team earlier this year, is the lone fighter to defeat Freire. Warren (7-3) earned a split decision victory over him back in 2010 in the featherweight tournament finals.
