Middleweight A Success For Jake Shields In UFC

Jake Shields came to Denver just seven days before competing in the altitude of the “Mile High City,” and you could tell it. Saturday night, Shields, a notorious workout machine, got tired in his decision victory over Ed Herman at UFC 150: Henderson vs. Edgar II.

“I came here for seven days,” Shields said. “If I had to do it again, I would (come) for three weeks. I underestimated (the altitude).”

Shields controlled Herman, scoring three takedowns and keeping him on the canvas for almost nine minutes. After a clinching match was evident early on, you could tell Shields was tired due to the high elevation.

“Props to Ed Herman,” Shields said. “Next time I will show a lot more. It was very physical in there.”

Shields was making his 185-pound debut after moving up from welterweight. He is a former Strikeforce middleweight champion, but was unsuccessful in trying to win the 170-pound belt from Georges St-Pierre last year.
