Going up one weight class, from a welterweight to a middleweight fighter, has given Jake Shields (27-6-1) a different outlook at training camp.
“I don’t have to worry about weight cutting,” said Shields. “Sometimes my camps run really good then the last couple of weeks focuses on cutting weight that it takes up my whole camp. I start feeling weak and depleted. This time I didn’t have to worry about any weight cutting at all.”
Prior to joining the UFC, Shields held the middleweight championship in Strikeforce and EliteXC. He has fought four times in the UFC, all in the middleweight division. His UFC record is 2-2.
“It was a tough decision, but then Joe Silva said he wanted to see me up there so I’m giving it a shot,” said Shields. “I think it’s a good idea. I felt really good training at this weight. I feel strong and have a small weight cut. So hopefully everything goes smooth.”
Jake Shields (27-6-1) will make his UFC middleweight debut against Ed Herman (20-7) on August 11 at UFC 150.
