Jamie Varner knew something wasn’t right during action Saturday night with Joe Lauzon at UFC on Fox: Shogun vs. Vera. The two, who engaged in a war eventually won by Lauzon, were given Fight of the Night honors.
Varner, who was coming off a victory over Edson Barboza in a fight he took on short notice, also stepped up for the UFC to face Lauzon. Terry Etim was originally set to meet Lauzon, but he went down with an injury.
“Looks like I broke my hand,” Varner said. “I mean you can kind of see it, the knuckle is gone. When one of my right hands landed, it was gone; it hurt pretty bad.”
Varner and Lauzon went toe-to-toe for the better part of two rounds, but it was “J-Lau” who locked in a submission victory to secure the victory. Despite the loss, Varner was pleased with his performance overall.
“I am proud of my performance,” said Varner, who returned to the UFC prior to the Barboza match. “I would love to fight him again. Not right away, but some day. And I will go ahead and give myself credit for performance of the night.”
