The planned Rory MacDonald-BJ Penn fight for UFC 152: Benavidez vs. Johnson is no more, as it was reported Saturday night that MacDonald has been forced off the card due to a cut.
UFC president Dana White informed members of the media following UFC on Fox: Shogun vs. Vera that MacDonald was cut in training and needed 40 stitches to close the gap. He cannot have any contact for a month, forcing the fight to be scrapped.
White said Penn had not been told yet, and was unsure what would happen in regards to “The Prodigy” as far as remaining on the card. Ariel Helwani was the first to report the MacDonald news.
In an update, Penn has posted that he would be fine with waiting until October to meet MacDonald.
“I am sorry to hear about the injury to (MacDonald), this is a fight that got me out of retirement and one that I was looking forward to. I would like to wish Rory a speedy and healthy recovery and request a postponement of our fight to the Rio card. To Rory, let’s stay with VADA and continue through with the program from now until we fight!”
