Mauricio “Shogun” Rua vs. Brandon Vera

In tonight’s main event, Brandon Vera returns from an injury to take on UFC great Mauricio “Shogun” Rua. Coming off a war with Dan Henderson, Rua needs a win to remain a title contender and will be a serious favorite in this fight. Herb Dean gets the nod for referee duties.

Round 1: Vera opens with a strong body kick. Nicely timed takedown for Shogun. Unexpected top position for Shogun who works to pass guard. Shogun moves to side control but has not been able to do any damage. Now in full side control and tries to work a guillotine but Vera gets to his feet. Shogun drops for a single and get caught in a guillotine. He looks to have it in tight but Shogun eventually pulls out. Big punch from the top position and pins he arms and lands a few more before passing into side control and then the back. Shogun doing some more work here.

Round 2: Shogun pins Vera against the fence and lands some knees and elbows that rattle Vera. Vera not giving up though and lands a nice kick. Shogun with a big knee to the head and has him in the clinch. Shogun now going for the back as the two stand again. Vera fires back with a head kick but showing some damage on his left eye. A leg kick and right hand lands before the two clinch. Fatigue playing a factor for both fighters with 1:30 left in the round. Vera lands a nice trip and ends up in half guard. Vera appears to have an opening to pass and free his leg but is not going for it. A couple more elbows from the top close the round out for Vera.

Round 3: Shogun comes at Vera early and now has him up against the cage. The two disengage before Vera lands a leg kick and a left hand. Big knee from Shogun in the clinch as Vera has his knees on the mat. The two get back standing as Vera now pours it on. A leg kick and big knees from Vera before Shogun counters with a trip and ends up in half guard once again. Big shots and short elbows from Shogun who continues to batter his opponent.

Round 4: A ton of heart shown from both fighters as we start the fourth round. Big elbow from Vera who throws it like a jab. Shogun goes for another takedown before landing a knee from the clinch. Interesting wrestling strategy from the Brazilian. The two separate before Vera lands a left hook, right leg combo before eating an uppercut from Shogun. The fight has turned into an endurance contest as they’ve exerted a ton of energy and taken a lot of damage. An uppercut and series of left hands rock Vera who falls to the ground. Referee Herb Dean comes into stop the action.

It was a heroic victory from Shogun who has been in yet another war in Saturday’s main event. Shogun’s wrestling and Vera’s will were two big surprises in the fight. The big question is whether Shogun or Machida will earn the nod as the next light heavyweight title contender.
