Jamie Varner returned to the UFC and made a huge splash, defeating rising prospect Edson Barboza. Now, Varner is set to face Joe Lauzon at UFC on Fox 4 next month.
Varner (20-6-1) dropped Barboza, scoring a knockout after taking the fight on short notice. He told MMAjunkie.com Radio recently that he believes a win over Lauzon (21-7) places him in great standing.
“It just seemed like another golden opportunity. It’s a win-win situation, just like the Edson Barboza fight,” Varner said. “One, it’s short-notice, and two, it’s another guy arguably in the top-15 in the world. I’m supposed to lose to a guy like Joe Lauzon.”
Varner has won three consecutive fights since a decision loss to Dakota Cochrane. He is replacing Terry Etim, who was forced out of the Lauzon bout with an injury.
