“Strikeforce: Rockhold Vs. Kennedy” Results

Welcome to’s live coverage of Strikeforce: Rockhold vs. Kennedy. Tonight’s fight card comes to us live from the Rose Garden in Portland, Oregon. The main card will air live on Showtime while air on Showtime Extreme.

Jason High vs. Nate Moore

Round 1: The bout was a dark match, as he didn’t take place on the actual televised prelim portion of the card. High scored a guillotine choke just 26 seconds into the match, earning a submission victory.

Jordan Mein vs. Tyler Stinson

Our first televised bout features welterweights Jordan Mein (24-8) and Tyler Stinson (23-8). The referee will be Dave Hagen.

Round 1: Mein comes right after Stinson, connecting with several big-time strikes to start. Mein is searching for the knockout early by throwing bombs right to the face of Stinson. Mein has caused a cut on Stinson’s face with his serious of blows. Stinson’s eye is starting to swell shut, as Mein continues to apply the pressure. Mein lands a big 1-2 combo that pushes Stinson back against the cage, but Stinson answers back with a big right of his own. Uppercut by Mein, but Stinson tries to fire off his own strike as the round comes to an end.

Round 2: Mein continues to be aggressve, landing a big body blow that really causes damage to Stinson. Mein with a three-punch combo, but Stinson quickly comes back with a right of his own. Mein coninues to pick apart Stinson, but Stinson shoots in and gets a takedown. Mein quickly gets back up and lands another strike to the face. Mein’s face is now cut as well, landing a few kicks to the legs of Mein is Stinson. Counter hook by Stinson and he may be just stole this round thanks to the takedown.

Round 3: Stinson lands kicks to start the round, and a counter punch as well. Stinson continues to push the pace, coming right after Mein. Stinson lands a straight jab, but Mein walks right through it and lands his own. One-two combo by Mein connects, and Stinson misses a sweeping left. Left lands by Mein, as does an uppercut and Mein looks to have found the perfect range now. Mein with a huge right and counters another Stinson punch. The two finish off the fight by exchanging strikes, and we go to the scorecards.

Justin Wilcox vs. Jorge Masvidal

A pair of lightweights step inside the cage next, as Justin Wilcox (11-4) takes on one-time title contender Jorge Masvidal (22-7). The referee will be John McCarthy.

Round 1: Big head-kick attempt by Wilcox, as he seems to take a poke to the eye to start. Wilcox having to go deep inside on Masvidal just to get close, as Masvidal sits back and waits to attack. Wilcox gets in and grabs hold of Masvidal, taking him to the mat. Masvidal working hard to get back up, landing some quick elbows to the face of Wilcox as the wrestler keeps hold of him. Back to the stand-up game and Masvidal starts going on the offensive, landing lefts and rights. Flying knee by Masvidal connects and he goes on the attack, as Wilcox tries running away. Masvidal hitting him with everything, including a big liver shot. Wilcox tries to get a takedown, but Masvidal fights it off and just missing a big right hook. Masvidal hitting him very hard, including a second knee. No idea how Wilcox is still standing, he even breaks a quick smile before pushing Masvidal nearly over. Wilcox firing back now and the round comes to an end.

Round 2: Wilcox trying to take this fight to the ground, but Masvidal doesn’t allow it. Masvidal with another knee. Body kick by Wilcox connects, as he tries to come in low and hit Masvidal in the chin. Wilcox faking the takedown and looking to land a right, but struggling to off-set the seven-inch reach advantage Masvidal has. Masvidal takes a head-kick and taunts Wilcox to continue striking. Right to the chin, and another by Masvidal land. Under two minutes to go in the round, as Wilcox attempts a Superman punch by jumping into the air. Masvidal fends off another takedown attempt with ease. Body shot by Wilcox lands, a does a right to the ear. Another failed takedown attempt by Wilcox and Masvidal misses wild with a left. A knee doesn’t miss by Masvidal, though, as he hits Wilcox again flush.

Round 3: Wilcox with a big right to start, as Masvidal ignores an open to counter-punch. Wilcox pushing the pressure on Masvidal now, as Wilcox lands a jab, followed by a nice 1-2 combo. Wilcox the aggressor in this round, firig off combos and looking for takedowns. Kick lands by Masvidal, though he eats an uppercut for his effort. Masvidal fakes a knee and lands a right. Wilcox fakes a punch and gets a takedown, but Masvidal quickly gets to his feet as Wilcox pushes him against the cage. Now, Wilcox has control of the legs but Masvidal is able to begin walking up the cage. Masvidal gets up without suffering any damage. Wilcox shoots for a single-leg, but Masvidal fights it off. Under a minute to go and Wilcox continues to be more aggressive. Masvidal lands a knee and fends off another takedown attempt.

Joe Duarte vs. Ryan Couture

We have the son of UFC Hall of Fame fighter Randy Couture up next, as Ryan Couture (4-1) and Joe Duarte (10-2) meet in a lightweight contest. Randy will be in the corner of Ryan as usual. The referee will be Shawn Gregory.

Round 1: A touch of gloves and Duarte takes control of the cage. Couture tries to land a kick but eats a straight right from Duarte. Front-kick caught by Duarte and he lands a right to the face. Couture pushes Duarte against the cage, as Duarte locks in a choke after Couture tries for a takedown. Duarte lets go and Couture attempts the takedown again to no success. Straight left by Couture, as he continues to throw kicks to keep Duarte guessing. Duarte doing a great job of catching Couture’s kicks and countering well. Running knee and a right connect by Duarte. After catching a kick, Duarte gets a takedown, but Couture looks for a submission for a brief second.

Round 2: Duarte going after Couture, but it’s Couture who gets the quick takedown and looking for another after Duarte jumps to his feet. Couture unable to get the second takedown as Duarte fights it off. Big kick lands by Duarte, who is very precise with his striking. Inside leg kick and a right by Couture, who follows with a front kick. Couture gets in close and lands a combo, as Duarte continues to push forward. Duarte this time with a takedown, and lets Couture up. Couture shoots in but is stuffed right away, switching to some knees. Duarte with a flying knee attempt that Couture moves away from. Ninety-seconds to go in the round, and it’s really up for grabs right now. Another quick takedown attempt by Couture that eventually gets Duarte to the ground. Couture landing some strikes to the face and gets a hook in, attempting a rear-naked choke on Duarte right now. He rolls and has a crank on the neck with less than 20 seconds to go. Couture to the mount, landing big elbows to Duarte and take this round.

Round 3: Likely an even fight, as Duarte goes for a Superman punch. Couture with a knee that seems to hurt Duarte. Head-kick by Duarte is blocked by Couture, who circles and looks for his opportunity to pounce. Couture pushes Duarte up against the cage, but can’t get the takedown. Big miss by Couture and Duarte takes advantage, getting a takedown and working for a choke. Duarte unable to get it, as Couture slips out. Couture gets out and moves to land some blows to the body of Duarte. Scramble results in Duarte just pushing Couture over and not getting the takedown. Couture gets the takedown, stacking Duarte up against the cage and avoids submission attempts. Less than a minute to go. Duarte catches a kick but Couture goes to knees and dirty boxing inside the clinch like his father. Couture takes him to his back with less than 30 seconds to go. Elbows to the face by Couture, as Duarte gets up and eats knees and a shoulder.

Pat Healy vs. Mizuto Hirota

It’s time for the prelim main event, as Pat Healy (29-17) takes on Mizuto Hirota (14-4-1) in a match that could lift Healy to the No. 1 contender spot in the lightweight division. The third man inside the cage will be Dave Hagen.

Round 1: Hirota comes right out and lands stiff jabs to Healy. Big left by Hirota misses and he goes to clinch, pushing Healy up against the cage. Hirota gets a trip takedown, landing on top of Healy and looking to move to mount. Healy doing a good job of avoiding any damage as he seems surprised by the takedown. The ref stands them up and Healy goes to the attack. Hirota with a right that lands on the chin of Healy. Hirota almost gets another trip but Healy avoids it this time. Hirota with a nice combo that lands. Healy shoots in, Hirota fights it off, Healy grabs the ankle but Hirota gets away again. Hirota throws a left and looks to land a big right hook but misses.

Round 2: Healy throwing elbows now to start the action. Hirota pushes him against the cage, getting Healy to the ground once again. Healy avoids damage and gets to his feet. Healy landing knees to the body of Hirota against the fence, but it’s Hirota who lands an elbow. Healy gets a double-leg takedown with two minutes to go in the round. Healy landing elbows to the face of Hirota, remaining on top and in control. Healy latching on to the ankles, and has caused a small cut and swelling over the right eye of Hirota. To the stand-up game, which Hirota is winning by landing quick jabs. Healy shoots in and powers Hirota to the ground, connecting with quick elbows as the round comes to an end.

Round 3: The two exchange to start, with Hirota getting the advantage by pushing Healy up against the cage. Healy landing some knees in the clinch, but Hirota doing a nice job of avoiding the brunt of the damage. The ref splits them up and returns the fighters to the center. Healy eats a big left, but fires back with a right. They seem willing to stand and trade now, but Healy powers Hirota back to the fence, drops for a takedown, but Hirota fights it off. Healy with short knees and elbows, taking advantage of the dirty boxing position he’s in. Over a minute to go, Hirota nails some strikes, but Healy gets a takedown and looks to move into mount. Healy in position to do damage, but Hirota is avoiding it for the most part. Healy takes Hirota’s back, but the clock expires.

Robbie Lawler vs. Lorenz Larkin

Our first main card bout features middleweights Robbie Lawler (19-8) and Lorenz Larkin (12-0). Larkin is moving down from the ranks of light heavyweight. The referee will be John McCarthy.

Round 1: A touch of gloves and we are off. The two each throw kicks that cancel each other out, as Lawler has thrown four kicks to zero punches to start. Lawler hits Larkin, but Larkin fires right back. Lawler now throwing heavy hands at Larkin, pushing him against the fence. Larkin with a trip takedown and he lands on top, throwing quick elbows and strikes to Lawler. Larkin moving, but Lawler gets back to his feet. Larkin landing some heavy punches, and mixing in leg kicks, as Lawler begins stalking him. Uppercut and an elbow by Larkin connect to the head of Lawler. Now, it’s Lawler holding Larkin against the fence, but Larkin slips out and lands two uppercuts and a knee. Third uppercut by Larkin, as Lawler fires off a knee as the round comes to an end.

Round 2: Larkin trying to take the lead leg out of Lawler, a round after landing 22 power strikes to just four by Lawler. Larkin with a straight right and landing several knees, as Lawler uses his power to push Larkin against the fence. Larkin very effective with his striking abilities so far, but Lawler fires off a heavy-handed combo. Larkin goes for a guillotine choke, but Lawler rolls out of it. Larkin with a head-kick that lands, as a huge cut appears on the head of Lawler with blood flowing down his face as the round ends.

Round 3: The cut is deep on Lawler, something that could halt the fight if the blood continues to flow. Lawler comes out different, looking for the kill shot against Larkin. Kick to the body by Lawler, but he pushes up against Larkin instead of trying to tee off on him. Appears as though Lawler doesn’t believe he can knock Larkin out. Lawler with some heavy punches, but Larkin comes right back with plenty of his own, moving much better than Lawler is. Just over two minutes to go, Larkin with a front kick to keep Lawler away from him. Larkin with a nice combo, using his jab effectively as Lawler gets wild. Larkin teeing off, landing a right and a left, followed by a kick to the face that grazes Lawler. Vision issues starting for Lawler due to the cut, as blood is going into the right eye. A minute to go, as Lawler fires off a big left. Larkin just picking Lawler apart with ease, landing jabs and kicks without any defense by Lawler. Larkin lands some elbows as Lawler tries to hit him with a big knee as the round ends.

Roger Gracie vs. Keith Jardine

We’ve got another middleweight contest up next, as Roger Gracie (4-1) debuts at the weight division against former UFC fighter Keith Jardine (17-10-2). The referee will be Shawn Gregory.

Round 1: Gracie is a huge-looking middleweight. Jardine still using his funky approach, throwing strikes from all different angles to start. Jardine comes in, and Gracie catches him and takes him to the ground. Gracie now in his best position, holding Jardine down and looking to go to work. Jardine fighting off Gracie very well, but Gracie remains sound in his attack, not rushing anything. Gracie starts to grab the head, as Jardine works his way back to the fence. Gracie with a knee to the body, and Gracie takes him back to the canvas. Gracie traps Jardine’s right arm and unloads with several punches to the face. Gracie into the full-mount position, locking up Jardine’s legs as we go under a minute. Gracie drags him closer to the middle of the cage, landing elbows to the face. Jardine busted open, Gracie goes for a top triangle but is unable to get it as the round comes to an end.

Round 2: Gracie outlanded Jardine 23-3 in strikes during the first round, and starts right off with a front-kick to begin this round. Jardine comes in with big lefts and rights, but Gracie takes Jardine down and begins trapping the arm again. Jardine gets the arm out, but is back on the canvas with Gracie going to work. Gracie takes the back and looks to lock in a rear-naked choke. One leg hook in for Gracie as he pushes Jardine’s hands away. Another hook in, but Gracie loses the choke as Jardine turns into him. Gracie locks in a body triangle and goes back to work on the neck, as blood pours from the face of Jardine. Gracie rolls to his own back, trying to secure the choke with the body triangle still locked in. Jardine breathing heavy, trying to fight this choke attempt off. Jardine’s face is a crimson mess. Gracie going for an arm triangle, but Jardine slips out, likely thanks to the amount of blood. Gracie finds himself on top position as the round comes to an end.

Round 3: Another front-kick to start the round courtesy of Gracie. Jardine gets away from Gracie’s attempt at a takedown. Gracie seems content to way for Jardine to come in and try to take this to the mat again. Jab by Gracie, as Jardine lands a big left that flinches Gracie. Jardine with another strike, and Gracie shoots in, grabbing hold of Jardine as Jardine escapes his grasp. Jardine with a big uppercut attempt that misses. Under two minutes to go as Jardine comes in again. Jardine fires a big right, but Gracie grabs him and lands a knee to the body. Jardine trying to taunt Gracie into coming and and getting caught with a minute to go. Gracie with a nice jab, followed by a kick to the body. Jardine misses with a 1-2 combo, and Gracie keeps him back with his front-kick.

Nate Marquardt vs. Tyron Woodley for vacant Strikeforce welterweight championship

Our first of two championship matches is next, as Nate Marquardt (31-10-2) and Tyron Woodley (10-0) compete for the vacant Strikeforce welterweight title. The belt was vacated when Nick Diaz entered the UFC last year. Your referee will be Dave Hagen.

Round 1: Woodley fires off a big right that misses, but lands a low leg kick. Marquardt with a kick of his own. Woodley catches him with a right hook that sends Marquardt sprawling backwards and Woodley pounces. Woodley has him on the ground and is landing knees to the body as Marquardt gets to one knee. Marquardt back up, as Woodley lands knees to the body. Marquardt lands a straight right that drops Woodley, who pops back up. Marquardt with a guillotine, but Woodley rolls out. Marquardt back with rights and lefts, pushing Woodley up against the fence. Elbow to the face by Marquardt. Woodley drops his hands as Marquardt lands a straight right. Another blow by Marquardt. Stiff elbow by Marquardt to the face of Woodley. Knee to the face by Woodley. Less than a minute to go in this action-packed round. Woodley runs away and Marquardt lands another right.

Round 2: Marquardt stalking Woodley against the fence, throwing a kick. Woodley with a spinning backfist that lands on the arm of Marquardt. Big leg kick by Marquardt knocks Woodley up against the fence. Marquardt stalking Woodley, staying in control and keeping Woodley guessing where his offense is coming from. Another inside leg kick by Marquardt. Spinning back-kick into the midsection of Woodley by Marquardt, but Woodley shrugs it off. Big straight right by Marquardt, who takes Woodley down and goes into the mount. Woodley with a strike on the way up from the mat. Marquardt finishes the round by nailing Woodley with a body blow, though Marquardt has blood coming from what looks like a cut on his lip.

Round 3: Woodley with a big combo, and Marquardt is reelig. Woodley drops him and pounces, with Woodley nailing him with some nice ground-and-pound. Marquardt needs to fight back, and it appears he has gotten his balance back on his mat. Marquardt grabs an arm, but is forced to release it. Woodley powers through and avoid the triangle attempt of Marquardt’s. Woodley woring the body, landing an elbow to the side of the head. The ref steps in and forces them to stand. Superman punch misses by Woodley, as Marquardt seems back and ready to go. Two minutes to go in the round before we reach the championship rounds. Body shot by Marquardt lands directly on Woodley. Marquardt stalking again, lands a big right as Woodley ties up the action. Knee by Marquardt and an elbow that just misses.

Round 4: Straight right by Marquardt, followed by a three-punch combo – all to the jaw – and a front-kick. Right cross lands by Marquardt, as Woodley appears dazed. Marquardt lands three straight elbows and a left-right cobo that knock Woodley out. Marquardt walks away as Woodley falls to the canvas. Marquardt with a cartwheel across the cage.

Luke Rockhold (c) vs. Tim Kennedy for Strikeforce middleweight championship

It’s time for our main event, as Luke Rockhold (9-1) defends his Strikeforce middleweight title against Tim Kennedy (14-3). The third man inside the cage will be John McCarthy.

Round 1: Rockhold trying to find his range, as Kennedy throws a leg kick to test the distance. Rockhold with a big right and grabs Kennedy to clinch up against the fence. A knee to the body by Rockhold. Kennedy fires in with a wild punch, as Rockhold lands a powerful combo and forces him back against the cage. Rockhold landing with everything, as Kennedy flies back against the fence. Rockhold looking very deadly, but Kennedy turns things and gets the takedown. Rockhold trying to get out as Kennedy continues to keep a hold of him around the waist. Rockhold grabs Kennedy’s left arm and starts twisting it back, but that allows Kennedy to go into side control, taking the back as Rockhold gets back to his feet. Less than 30 seconds to go, and Kennedy lands a knee.

Round 2: Head-kick lands by Rockhold, but Kennedy goes for the takedown. Rockhold gets control on the ground, taking the back of Kennedy and locking in a hook as he attempts to secure the rear-naked choke. Kennedy gets to his base, but Rockhold remains in control and lands some quick punches to the face. Kennedy powers out and gets up. Swooping left hook misses by Kennedy, as Rockhold connects with a jab. Combo by Rockhold, as Kennedy fires off another inside leg kick. Rockhold connects with a body shot and a left liver kick. Kennedy catches Rockhold as he tries another kick. Rockhold attempts an armbar, but Kennedy flips out and pushes Rockhold against the fence. Spinning back kick misses by Rockhold, as Kennedy comes in and fires off a jab that Rockhold counters. Straight left by Rockhold, but Kennedy counters the punch again. Body kick by Rockhold, and Kennedy tries for a takedown but decides against it.

Round 3: Kennedy pushes Rockhold against the fence, landing knees and short shots to the body. The referee warns Rockhold about grabbing the fence, threatening to take a point away if he does it again. Stiff kick by Kennedy, but Rockhold catches him with a right hook. Rockhold tries to land a knockout blow but misses. Rockhold forces him against the fence, landing a big elbow to the side of the head. A left lands by Rockhold, as does another after a kick by Kennedy. Rockhold appears to just be picking his openings, powering through Kennedy. A takedown by Kennedy, as he takes the back and locks in a hook. Kennedy going for a rear-naked choke, but Rockhold is able to avoid it. Kennedy back to the back of Rockhold, but Rockhold stands strong with a minute to go in the round. Rockhold gets out and lands a big right hook. Kennedy avoids a 1-2 combo by the champion as the round comes to an end.

Round 4: Uppercut by Kennedy right off the bat, as Rockhold goes back to the attack. Rockhold throwing several big kicks that are just missing. Side kick by Kennedy, as Rockhold continues to stalk his challenger. Rockhold appears to know he is in control of this fight, landing a stiff body kick that knocks Kennedy up against the fence. Rockhold avoids a strike by Kennedy and drops Kennedy, jumping on him and landing a series of blows. Kennedy gets out and grabs Rockhold’s neck, attemping a guillotine. Rockhold escapes and they are back to their feet. Under a minute to go in the round, as Rockhold tries to get Kennedy down but Kennedy takes his back in the process. Rockhold sits and turns into Kennedy, landing a stiff strike and attempting a side choke.

Round 5: We have come to the final five minutes of action. Rockhold remains the more aggressive fighter, pushing the action and forcing Kennedy to defend himself. Kennedy shoots in but Rockhold fights it off. Straight left by Rockhold, who walks through a kick by Kennedy. Exchange, and Kennedy goes for another takedown, dropping to a single. Instead, Rockhold powers him over. Kennedy gets back to his feet and tries to lock in a guillotine, but Rockhold winds up on top and in control. Knees to the body by Rockhold. Two minutes to go and Kennedy still not fighting with a sense of urgency. Combo lands by Rockhold. Spinning backfist misses by Kennedy. A minute to go and Rockhold looks so much fresher at this time. Kennedy comes in, but Rockhold just powers him to the fence and into the clinch, landing some stiff shots as the round comes to an end.
