It appears that the plan is for UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos to face Cain Velasquez in a rematch from 2011 later this year. That leaves an unknown future for Alistair Overeem, who lost his shot at the belt earlier this year due to a failed drug test.
Overeem was scheduled to meet dos Santos, but was replaced by Frank Mir when he tested positive for elevated levels of testosterone. Some have said that Overeem should have to prove his standing, but Mir doesn’t believe so.
“He was No. 1 contender before the incident,” said Mir, in a recent interview with MMAMania.com. “Once he is available again, I don’t see why he doesn’t automatically skyrocket back up.”
The plan appears for dos Santos and Velasquez to meet before the year is out. The longer it takes to put the fight together, however, the longer it would take for Overeem to get the winner. Overeem is suspended from trying to secure his fight license again until December.
