Gunnar Nelson, who earned his black belt training under Renzo Gracie, has signed with the UFC, according to a report by MMAWeekly.com. Nelson holds a 9-0-1 MMA record to his credit.
Nelson has won several medals while competing in grappling events such as the Pan-American Championships, and also holds a black belt in karate. He trains with Gracie in New York City, while also working on his skills in his native home of Iceland.
The 23-year-old Nelson has competed at welterweight since turning pro in 2007. Six of his victories have come via submission, while three are courtesy of knockouts.
No official date has been set for Nelson’s debut. The UFC will head to England again in September for UFC on FUEL TV 5.
