Chael Sonnen doesn’t plan on attempting to become UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva’s best friend. In fact, Sonnen won’t even be touching gloves when the two square off in the main event of UFC 148: Silva vs. Sonnen II Saturday night.
“No – no touching of the gloves,” said Sonnen, during a recent interview with MMAjunkie.com. “I’m here to fight.”
Plan and simple words from a normally not-so-plain-and-spoken individual. Sonnen believes that he is better than Silva, and showed that during a 2010 meeting in which he was winning all four rounds before being submitted in the fifth by “The Spider.”
Despite all the heated staredowns, Sonnen does have some respect for Silva. The Brazilian has defended his UFC middleweight title more than anyone else in the history of the promotion, and is considered to be the greatest pound-for-pound fighter going today by many.
“Hate’s too strong of a word,” Sonnen said. “I want to beat Anderson up. I’m going to beat Anderson up. He’s a phony, he’s a fraud, and he’s got what I want.”
