Wanderlei Silva has all the pressure on his shoulders this evening, as “The Axe Murderer” competes in his native country of Brazil against Rich Franklin in the main event of UFC 147: Silva vs. Franklin II.
Silva has gone just 2-3 in his last five fights, and UFC president Dana White confirmed that he will have a talk with the legendary fighter if things do not go his way this evening.
“I love the guy,” said White, during the post-fight show for UFC on FX: Maynard vs. Guida Friday night. “And yes, if he takes some crazy damage in this fight and gets knocked down, he and I are going to have a talk.”
White has pushed fighters to retire rather than risk the chance of suffering even more damage. Chuck Liddell tried to talk his way back into the Octagon, but White offered him a day job that he accepted.
“I have said it many times; Silva was a Pride fighter and my arch nemesis for many years,” White said. “But, since he has stepped into the UFC, he has been nothing bu a stud. It’s almost like he was in the UFC his whole career.”
Silva earned a victory over Cung Le last year, while Franklin scored a decision victory against him during their first meeting in 2009.
