Wanderlei Silva was supposed to face his rival Vitor Belfort at the top of the UFC 147 fight card. The two Brazilian veterans had spent a season of The Ultimate Fighter (the first set in their home country, or any other country than the U.S., for that matter) coaching opposite one another and hyping their fight, only to have Belfort pull out with a broken hand.
Now, Silva will rematch Rich “Ace” Franklin in a fight that clearly would not have been scheduled unless the UFC had to scramble to find a replacement for Belfort. Regardless, Silva believes that the fans understand how these things go and are still excited to see the new UFC 147 main event.
“Well, the fans understand that injuries happen,” said Silva. “Franklin is another good name, he was the last champion before Anderson and he has a good reputation, a lot of guys know him here in Brazil. It’s gonna be a great success here in Brazil.
“My fight against Franklin is the same, it’s a rematch. Franklin is a really good fighter and I hope we’re gonna give a great show for the fans here in Brazil.”
UFC 147 is set to take place on Saturday, June 23, from the Mineirinho Stadium in Belo Horizonte, Brazil; don’t miss FightLine’s live, ongoing coverage of the event.
