Sam Stout and Spencer Fisher are no strangers to each other.
The two long time UFC lightweights, who have had their ups and downs inside the octagon, meet for the third time tomorrow night. The two co-headline the UFC’s fourth outing on the FX network. Their first meeting took place at ‘UFC 58 – USA vs. Canada’ back in 2006, where “Hands of Stone” took home a split decision victory. Their second bout, which took place at ‘UFC – Fight Night 10’ in 2007, went the way of Fisher, with all three judges scoring it for him.
Both men know each other well, and both know that their third, and likely final bout, could be the best one yet.
“I’m very excited about this fight. It seems crazy it was 2006 when we first fought, just seems like yesterday but we’ve had so many fights between then and now. I like the fact there’s someone in my career that fans will look back and say ‘those Stout v Fisher fights were awesome’. Obviously, I want to be the winner of the trilogy,” Stout said.
Fisher shares that sentiment; “Whenever me and Sam Stout fight, the fans will get to see something a little special. We’ve just got two styles that make for great fights, it’s a little bit of magic, two very technical strikers who came to have a war.”
Despite their long and storied careers, neither man is looking at this bout as any sort of indication of them reaching the twilights of their careers.
“I’m 36 and people keep bringing that up but I feel great. I’m getting better with my weight all the time and that’s making me feel younger, not older,” said Fisher.
While Stout hopes a win tomorrow will help him get closer to a title run; “Fighting on FX in the US is a great chance to fight in front of a large audience, and if this fight is as good as the first two then I think the win takes me up the rankings quite a bit.”
No matter who takes home the deciding victory in their trilogy, fans will have been treated to three fantastic fights between the two lightweight scrappers, and the real winners, will be those of us at home, and cageside, who get to see these two make magic yet again.
