As reigning UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva gears up to defend his belt for the second time against Chael Sonnen July 7 in Las Vegas, NV, friend and sensei-of-sorts, Steven Seagal has made himself more visible in the pre-fight buildup.
The actor and Aikido black belt recently spoke to Ariel Helwani on the MMA Hour (via Bloody Elbow) and let fans know to expect the unexpected from his student, Silva.
“I have (trained with Anderson Silva for this camp). I gave him some stuff that I consider to be very special, and I think it is also stuff that I don’t think most people will be expecting,” Seagal told Helwani. “There are millions of techniques that no one has ever seen in the UFC. I’ve showed him some of those, but I’m not going to talk about what they are. There are things that I think if Anderson decides to use them, they’ll be very effective.”
The actor and martial arts practitioner also elaborated on how he sees the rematch for the title with Sonnen going down.
“Chael last time had an extremely unfair advantage. Because, you know, that whole deal with I don’t know what it’s called, steroids, or whatever, performance-enhancing drugs or whatever… Let’s just say this, I think this time, they’re both going to be at their best. I don’t think there’s going to be any controversy, I don’t think there’s going to be any injuries. I think two great fighters are going to go out there and have it out, and I think my guy’s going to win. My guy’s going to win handily this time.”
Silva and Sonnen will rematch for the UFC’s middleweight title July 7 at UFC 148 in Las Vegas, NV on PPV.
