Fresh off of a unanimous decision victory in his rematch with Ian “Uncle Creepy” McCall, UFC flyweight Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson shared his thoughts on his official victory over McCall, as well as a little bit about his future opponent, Joseph Benavidez, in a fight for the UFC’s inaugural Flyweight Championship. The highlights are below:
On how it feels to be past McCall: “It feels good. I’ve finally got that mustache out of my life and now I’m going to Sexy Joe B (Benavidez).”
“Mighty Mouse’s” biggest change leading up to the rematch with Uncle Creepy:” “I think the biggest change was just going back to my roots, relying on my wrestling ability, relying on my athletic ability, keeping my balance, and just going out there and fighting and not overextending. Just being calm and relaxed. It’s a sport and you’ve got to be calm and relaxed and go out there and do your thing.”
Johnson’s evaluation of his own performance: “I made a couple of mistakes but I was able to get back to my feet where I’m strong, keep my balance, and let my hands go and just believe in my coaches… I listen to my coaches. That’s really the improvement tonight: me being a good student and listening to my coaches.”
The victorious flyweight’s future plans: “I’ve got a lot of work to do and I’ve just got to get ready for Joseph (Benavidez).”
While a date has not yet been set for the Johnson-Benavidez title fight, Benavidez has requested a September matchup to wrap up the delayed Four-man Flyweight tournament.
