Things could be better for Strikeforce lightweight champ Gilbert Melendez, but they could also be worse.
Melendez is without a doubt one of the best 155lbs fighters in the world, but cannot prove himself the best as he’s stuck in his Strikeforce contract, unable to finally enter the deep waters of the UFC. Though this clearly gets to Melendez, he knows there’s only so much he can do and he realizes that he could have it worse than being Strikeforce champ.
“As of now I’m just going to have to deal with the criticism,” Melendez admitted of his unenviable situation in a conversation with Sherdog. “I’m damned if I do, damned if I don’t in my situation right now. I don’t even want to preach that I’m the number one fighter in the world anymore. I just want to go do my thing in Strikeforce, and if somehow that opportunity comes up where I can prove it and fight some of the top talent, then I’m definitely up for it. But as of now, I’m going to be doing my thing here. I’m happy with Strikeforce and I’m happy with Showtime overall. Just sometimes you want different talent, but I’m happy overall.”
According to the rumors (and the fighter himself), Melendez’s contract with Strikeforce is set to last for three more fights — so, it’s a good thing he’s found a way not to go stir-crazy just yet.
