Jake Ellenberger Isn’t Planning On Waiting Long For Title Shot

If Jake Ellenberger defeats Martin Kampmann for his seventh UFC victory in eight tries Friday night at The Ultimate Fighter: Live Finale, many feel he will become a top contender in the UFC’s welterweight division.

However, with the titles currently held by Georges St-Pierre and Carlos Condit, and with GSP still recovering from knee surgery, any possible title match could be several months off. For Ellenberger (27-5) that means remaining inside the Octagon and not taking time off.

“It’s be a long way,” said Ellenberger, in a recent interview with “I’ve not been one who likes to wait, especially when I’m doing well. My goal, the whole reason I’m in this sport, is to be a world champ. Getting to that fight is ideal, but at the same time, I don’t want to sit out six months or even a year.”

Victories over Diego Sanchez and Jake Shields have pushed Ellenberger into title-talk. Kampmann enters having won two consecutive fights, with his last two defeats coming by decision to Shields and Sanchez.
