When Dan Henderson left Strikeforce to re-sign with the UFC, he left the promotion’s light heavyweight title vacant.
Last night following the Strikeforce: Grand Prix Finale, promotional CEO Scott Coker revealed that the likely candidates to compete for the vacant strap are former champs Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante — who decimated Mike Kyle at last night’s event, winning by first-round submission — and Gegard Mousasi.
“I think the likely candidate you’ll see in the future at some point (for Cavalcante) is Gegard Mousasi,” Coker said at last night’s presser. “When that fight happens happens, I’m not sure –- or if it all –- but I think it’s a natural progression for ‘Feijao.'”
Since losing the belt to Henderson, Cavalcante has won two straight, including last night’s victory over Kyle. Mousasi has won four fights since losing the title to King Mo back in 2010 (Cavalcante took the belt from Lawal), and fought Keith Jardine to a draw as well.
