Nate Marquardt has been waiting several months just to fight again. Tyron Woodley has been waiting just as long to get his chance at the Strikeforce welterweight title.
On July 14, from Portland, Oregon, Marquardt and Woodley will square off. The card will be shown live on Showtime, as the two gave us their insight during Strikeforce: Barnett vs. Cormier Saturday night.
“It is extremely satisfying to be fighting for the belt,” Woodley said. “Nate’s a tough guy, but if you want to wear a belt, you want to win it in a fight that means something.”
Woodley is undefeated in his brief MMA career after an outstanding period as a wrestler at the University of Missouri. He last defeated Jordan Mein earlier this year.
Marquardt has been out of action since early in 2011, as he was forced out of a planned bout with Rick Story and eventually axed by the UFC for an issue with TRT. He signed with BAMMA in England, but never fought for the company.
“I am so excited,” Marquardt said. “It is truly an honor to be fighting in Strikeforce, especially for the title. Tyron is a tough guy, he’s undefeated; he’s a tough dude. It’s gonna be a great fight and we are gonna put on a show.”
The main event of the card is expected to feature Luke Rockhold defending his Strikeforce middleweight title against Tim Kennedy.
