The UFC announced today that Chad Mendes (11-1) has been tasked with welcoming Cody McKenzie (13-2) to the featherweight division. The two fighters are expected to meet at UFC 148 this summer.
A cast member on The Ultimate Fighter 12, McKenzie has gone 2-2 in the UFC’s lightweight division since being eliminated from the show in the quarter-final round. McKenzie, famous for his guillotine choke, rebounded from a two-fight losing streak earlier this week by submitting UFC newcomer Marcus LeVesseur with a guillotine in the first round at UFC on FUEL TV 3.
A Team Alpha Male standout, Mendes will be attempting to rebound from his first professional loss when he meets McKenzie. Mendes challenged reigning featherweight champion Jose Aldo for his title back in January at UFC 142 and was swiftly denied, losing by first-round knockout.
UFC 148 is expected to take place on July 7 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The event will be headlined by a middleweight title fight between Anderson Silva and Chael Sonnen.
