In the latest hit to the UFC’s summer lineup, bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz has blown his ACL and will be unable to meet Urijah Faber to conclude their trilogy at UFC 148.
MMAWeekly first reported the news.
Cruz was slated to face Faber in a rubber match in the co-main event of UFC 148, which is scheduled to take place on July 7 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. The card will be headlined by the much-anticipated rematch between Anderson Silva and Chael Sonnen, which was originally intended to main event a blockbuster stadium show in Brazil.
Cruz is currently coaching opposite Faber on The Ultimate Fighter: Live. No word yet on how the UFC intends to deal with his injury on the show, but the cancellation of their fight certainly deflates an already limping season of TUF.
It is also currently unknown whether or not the UFC will find a replacement opponent for Faber, or if they’ll pull The California Kid off of the card altogether.
