UFC president Dana White announced yesterday that Brazilian light heavyweights Mauricio “Shogun” Rua (20-6) and Thiago Silva (14-3, 1 NC) are likely to meet at UFC 149 this summer.
After spending a year on the sidelines for trying to pass off fake urine as his own on a drug test, Silva returned to action to meet Alexander Gustafsson. The two did battle at UFC on FUEL TV 2 earlier this month, with Gustafsson taking a clear-cut unanimous decision victory. Had Silva’s win over Brandon Vera not been overturned to a no contest, the 29-year-old would be 1-2 in his last three.
Shogun lost his title to current champion Jon Jones, but rebounded from that loss with a quick knockout over fellow former champ Forrest Griffin. Last November, in his most recent appearance, Rua took on his old Pride FC peer Dan Henderson in one of the best fights in MMA history. Unfortunately, Rua did not pick up a win to go along with that accolade.
UFC 149 is scheduled to take place on July 21 at the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary, Canada.
