Along with a fake pair of glasses and nose, Chael Sonnen poked fun at UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva Tuesday during a special press conference. The event, which was held in Brazil, was used to confirm Silva-Sonnen 2 for Las Vegas instead of Rio de Janeiro. The fight will be the main event of UFC 148 on July 7.
Sonnen was respectful at times, but, for the most part, used the press conference to continue to annoy Silva and take shots at both “The Spider,” his training partners and Brazil.
“I’m embarrassed Anderson Silva sits here, in front of TV guys, with a fake belt pretending to be the champion,” Sonnen said. “He talks about his legacy; he became No. 1 contender by beating the great Chris Leben. He defended his belt against phenomenal Patrick Cote and fought tough Thales Leites. What a star.”
Sonnen added, “Our skills are not even close. Go to your Ed Soares (Silva’s manager) school of excuse-making because you’re gonna need them on July 7th.”
Following the question session, Silva and Sonnen posed in the typical staredown. Silva wouldn’t look at Sonnen, and Sonnen didn’t make an effort to look at Silva. However, just as it ended, the two went face-to-face, with Silva walking off the stage.
