Maximo Blanco vs. Marcus Brimage

Our first fight of the evening will see Maximo Blanco make his featherweight and UFC debut against TUF alum Marcus Brimage.

Round 1: Southpaw vs. southpaw here. Blanco halts Brimage’s advance with an inside leg kick. Brimage chasing after Blanco; Blanco gets out of the way without taking any shots. Brimage pushes forward and lands a straight left. Brimage lunges in and lets off a few hooks, scoring with a left. Brimage finding success by getting in quick, planting and scoring with combos and then getting out. Brimage overcommits and gets taken down, but he’s quickly back to his feet. Blanco with a left outside leg kick. Brimage bulls in again and gets off with punches.

Round 2: Brimage with a solid outside leg kick before circling away. Blanco lands a front kick and follows with a jumping body kick. Brimage tags him with a right. Another jumping round kick for Blanco, this one lands as a knee. Brimage powers forward and knocks Blanco down; they scramble across the cage. The action has slowed, with Brimage looking more tentative and Blanco noncommittal. Brimage moves forward and slips after a leg kick. Blanco countering well as Brimage lunges in to close the distance. The crowd boos at the round’s end. Brimage runs into a front kick.

Round 3: Blanco not really engaging much, making it difficult for Brimage to make it a slugfest. Brimage hits a nice cut kick that knocks Blanco off balance as he goes for a kick of his own. Blanco is denied on a takedown attempt, but lands some punches afterward. Brimage blitzes Blanco again, landing a few shots. Little urgency to Blanco’s game tonight. Brimage chasing after Blanco and firing punches, getting in a few as Blanco circles away. Brimage stuffs another takedown and lands a pair of counter punches. Blanco with a left kick to the body.

Brimage mimics Blanco as he celebrates, calling him a runner. This leads to an impromptu tumbling contest; both men show off some nice flips. I’ll call it a draw.

Marcus Brimage defeated Maximo Blanco via split decision (29-28, 27-30, 29-28)

Keith Wisniewski vs. Chris Clements

Round 1: They touch gloves and set up in the center. Clements with a leg kick. Clements looking to land his overhand right; he throws two… tomahawk punches? Wisniewski hits a takeodwn and lands in side control. Wisniewski quickly takes mount. Clements scrambling; he regains half guard. Clements snuck in a an elbow that cut Wisniewski. Wisniewski landing elbows from half guard when the referee stands them up prematurely. Wisniewski cracks Clements with a right straight in a combination. Wisniewski with another right. Clements nails Wisniewski with a right hook. He drops Wisniewski with a spinning back kick. Clements swarms, but Wisniewski threatens with a triangle and backs him off. They end the round clinched on the cage.

Round 3: An embrace to begin the third. Clements tries to reverse a takedown, but Wisniewski is persistent, holding him down against the cage. Clements to his feet. Clements putting some hard shots on Wisniewski, who continues to walk through them. Another spinning back kick for Clements and a spinning back fist to follow. Wisniewski continues to push forward. Two hard punches connect for Clements, but Wisniewski just eats them. Wisniewski looking to close the gap and get the fight down, eating punches the whole time and landing some of his own. Clements with a cracking elbow on the break. Clements staggers Wisniewski with a hard punch to the gut. He’s pouring it on as the fight draws to a close, dropping Wisniewski with a flying knee. Clements standing over Wisniewski, throwing punches.

Chris Clements defeated Keith Wisniewski via split decision (29-28, 28-29, 30-27)

Mac Danzig vs. Efrain Escudero

Round 1: They touch gloves and begin engaging immediately. Neither man lands much before they close the distance and clinch against the cage. Danzig landing some nice punches inside before hitting the takedown. Escudero rolls for a heel hook, but Danzig defends and rolls out to the side. Escudero gets to his feet. Danzig sticking his jab well. Danzig using his range better, keeping Escudero on the end of his punches. Danzig working hard to drag Escudero to the mat, but Escudero defends well. Escuero shoots and Danzig defends. This one is evenly matched and neither man is holding a clear edge yet.

Round 3: It doesn’t seem to be impeding his movement, and he lands a kick with it shortly after. They clinch against the cage, with little coming from it. Danzig shoots for and is denied on a takedown. Danzig has the body lock and tries to drag Escudero down, ad the ref stops them. They clinch again, Danzig getting in a knee. More of the same even striking to close out the round.

Anthony Njokuani vs. John Makdessi

Round 1: Immediately the two flashy strikers are trading unorthodox kicks. Makdessi is taking the center and walking Njokuani down, but Njokuani is working the outside well, firing off hard leg kicks as Makdessi advances. Makdessi catches Njokuani with a left hook as he moves in with a knee. Makdessi beckons Njokuani to the center. Njokuani wobbles Makdessi with a hook; Makdessi fighting through it well and manages to defend himself as Makdessi comes after him. Njokuani with a pair of left body kicks. As the third round closes, Njokuani is starting to take a slight lead, landing more effectively.

Round 2: Measured striking to start the round, Makdessi scoring with the front leg side kick. Leg kicks for Njokuani. Njokuani catches a front kick and throws the cut kick, but doesn’t knock Makdessi down. Makdessi’s front leg showing a clear welt from Njokuani’s leg kicks. Makdessi cutting loose, tossing out a bevy of flashy kicks that most miss. Njokuani with a solid uppercut from the pocket. The crowd is growing restless as the technical striking battle is waged. Njokuani catches the leg again and runs Makdessi across the cage. They trade punches before the bell.

Round 3: Njokuani destroying Makdessi’s left leg with kicks. Makdessi starting to find his range some, but Njokuani still controlling the fight from the outside. Body kick for Njokuani, followed by a right hand. A hook kick lands to the face for Makdessi. Njokuani sticks a hard right in between two solid body kicks. Njokuani starting to pick Makdessi apart, landing straight punches. Makdessi with a kick to the midsection. Fifteen seconds to go and Makdessi is pushing the pace, Njokuani keeps away from him until the bell.

Anthony Njokuani defeated John Makdessi via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

Matt Brown vs. Stephen Thompson

Round 1: They touch gloves and Thompson immediately gets off with two front leg side kicks. Brown puts his hand on the mat to prevent the head kick and goes for the takedown. Thompson shucks him off. Brown catches a kick and goes for the single leg, but Thompson defends him again. Brown again shoots for the single; Thompson defends well but is eventually swept to the mat. Brown posturing trying to throw. Brown stacking Thompson, but Thompson showing good hip movement in defending. Thompson making space, but Brown won’t let him stand. Thompson fights up anyway. Brown right on him against the cage, working knees. Thompson turns him, but Brown takes him down and takes his back. Thompson pops up, but Brown is still on him. Thompson continually defending, but Brown is on him like glue, dragging him down eventually. Brown working for a calf crank. Thompson defends and takes top position. He gets too high on Brown and is easily swept. Brown ends the round in half guard.

Round 2: Brown’s made it clear he doesn’t want much to do with Thompson on the feet, so let’s see how Wonderboy adjusts. Thompson keeping brown at bay with kicks so far. Brown with a head kick before shooting the single. Thompson defends and gets to his feet; they engage in the clinch briefly before separating. Brown shoots for another takedown from way outside, but Thompson still can’t defend. He gets to his feet in short order though and then separates. Good leg kick for Thompson. Thompson just barely misses with a hard head kick, then hurts Brown with punch. Thompson is teeing off on a very hurt Brown. Thompson is tired too, getting taken down easily. Brown is badly hurt, he can barely get to his feet. Thompson is tired, but he’s still putting the hurt on Brown. Brown runs into the cage. These two are exhausted and Brown is hurt. Brown drops Thompson with a right. He’s dropping punches and improving position with a minute to go. Brown with some mean short elbows, one of them cuts Thompson wide open. Brown stacking Thompson, pounding him with right hands. Brown ends the round in side control, pounding away at a badly bleeding Thompson.

Round 3: Thompson is cut up headed into the last round and Brown is on him early, backing him to the cage with strikes. Thompson’s legs are dead and he has little zip on his kicks. He falls after throwing a kick. Thompson hanging in there and getting in some good punches though. Thompson with a three-piece. Brown is being Brown, dogging after Thompson, but Thompson is nailing him now. Brown gets stung and goes for the takedown, putting Thompson down easily. Thompson gets up quickly. Thompson with a one-two-three. Brown doing work from the clinch, sweeps Thompson with a kick. He follows Thompson down and stacks him, passing to side control quickly. Brown busting up Thompson’s face now, forcing the blood to flow. Brown looking for the mounted crucifix; he gets it. Brown sets up the mounted triangle from that position, and starts pounding away with his left hand. Tough fight for Thompson, who ends the fight a bloody mess.

Matt Brown defeated Stephen Thompson via unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28, 30-27)

Travis Browne vs. Chad Griggs

Round 1: They touch gloves and Browne takes the center. Browne with a clear size advantage. Browne nails Griggs with a big double-jumping knee, Jose Aldo style, before dragging him to the mat. Browne takes mount, though Griggs is making it difficult for him. Browne working for the arm triangle, it’s deep. Griggs smacks Browne in the back of the head twice before tapping.

Mark Bocek vs. John Alessio

The first fight on the main card will take place in the lightweight division.

Round 1: They touch gloves. After some range-finding on the feet, Bocek shoots for the takedown. He gets Alessio pinned to the cage. Bocek grating Alessio against the fence; he eventually drags him down, even though Alessio grabs onto the fencepost. Bocek in half guard, wrking ground and pound. Alessio recovers guard. Bocek is constantly trying to improve position; Alessio is forced into defense mode. Bocek takes the back, landing solid hammerfists as he tightens control. The round ends with Bocek working the body triangle.

Round 2: Alessio with a strong one-two as the first significant strikes of the round. Alessio starting to put things together on his feet, keeping Bocek at range and putting his hands on him. Bocek drives for the power double and gets Alessio down. Alessio with butterfly guard, but Bocek, clearly the more skilled fighter on the ground, is improving position with relative ease and landing ground and pound. Alessio gets to his feet and lands a left hook in quick succession. Alessio looks a little tired, but he gets in a sequence of solid punches with about forty seconds left. Bocek drives him into the fence though, where he works for the takedown untilthe bell.

Round 3: Alessio turning it up, landing some solid punches as his corner urges him on. Alessio throws a poorly timed front kick that Bocek snatches and uses to take him down. Bocek immediately moves into back mount with over three and a half minutes to go. They fight for position, with Alessio showing solid defense. Alessio reverses and gets to his feet. Bocek is bleeding as Alessio charges after him. Bocek with a right hand. Bocek with the takedown. Bocek works to take the back, but Alessio scoots out the backdoor. They end up in the clinch again though and Bocek works into superior position quickly. Thirty seconds left and the crowd boos. They separate and Alessio presses forward with seconds left, but cannot get the finish.

Mark Bocek defeated John Alessio via unanimous decision (30-27, 39-28 , 30-27)

Mark Hominick vs. Eddie Yagin

Round 1: They touch gloves as Hominick storms out of the gate. Yagin hanging in the pocket and landing some hard shots on Hominick as The Machine plays the aggressor. Hominick’s face is already reddened. Yagin with two hard leg kicks. Yagin bleeding from the cheek, but still going to work from the pocket. Yagin is dotting Hominick up and chopping his legs with leg kicks. Yagin stumbles Hominick with a right hand. Yagin drops Hominick with a right hand and follows him down with ground and pound. Hominick regains guard and eventually gets to his feet, but he’s bleeding from both eyes and dazed. Yagin looks to be tiring. Hominick pecking away with jabs. Hominick with a left hook to the body. Hominick has regained his composure, but Yagin is still landing punches with steam. Hominick to the body again.

Round 2: Yagin with a hard left hook that Hominick partially blocks. Yagin digging in and connecting with hard punches as Hominick works the technical game. Yagin with another hard leg kick and this round is off to the same start as the last. Hominick with a double jab. Hominic to the body. Leg kick for Yagin. Yagin drops Hominick with a right hand once again. He follows Hominick down and ends up in guard again; Hominick is lumped up and bleeding. Hominick gets to his feet. Yagin barely misses with a spinning back kick to the head. Hominick has a hematoma under his left eye similar to the alien lump he sported in the Jose Aldo fight. Hominick has his wits about him again and has drawn more blood from Yagin. Hominick pressing forward, but Yagin isn’t backing down. Hominick with two stiff lefts, one to the body. Hominick picking Yagin apart with stiff punches. Both men are bleeding and battered.

Round 3: They touch gloves and start slugging it out. Hominick pressing forward with crisp shots, but he’s still eating some hard counters from Yagin. Hominick looks to be the slightly fresher of the two, putting more punches on Yagin than the other way around. Yagin with a thudding leg kick. Another. Hominick pecking away at Yagin, who loads up on single shots. Yagin isn’t going anywhere though, keeping Hominick honest with threatening punches. Hominick has established the jab well, and is walking Yagin down with one-twos now. Hominick is teeing off on Yagin, but Yagin is standing right in front of him and firing back through the massive flow of blood. They slug it out until the bell.

Eddie Yagin defeated Mark Hominick via unanimous decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28)

Miguel Torres vs. Michael McDonald

Round 1: A glove touch and we’re underway. Mostly a feinting match so far, with McDonald having let go his hands a bit more than Torres. McDonald backs Torres up with a pair of hard shots. McDonald being aggressive, turtling Torres up against the fence as he fires off hard punches. McDonald countering well as Torres overcommits; Torres gets his mouthpiece knocked loose. Torres gets rocked with an uppercut and goes down after eating another. He’s already out as McDonald goes to work on him with ground and pound.

Brendan Schaub vs. Ben Rothwell

Round 1: Schaub takes the center early on, Rothwell looking to counter. Rothwell backs Schaub against the cage; Schaub turns him, but Rothwell backs him off with the Thai clinch. Schaub lands a spinning back elbow and charges after Rothwell. Rothwell answers his overzealous approach by standing in front of him and throwing punches. Schaub gets touched by a left hook and goes out cold. The ref halts his follow up ground and pound.

Rory MacDonald vs. Che Mills

Round 1: They touch gloves. MacDonald in the middle. Mills getting off with leg kicks. Mills sticks MacDonald with a hard left uppercut and MacDonald takes him down. MacDonald putting together some mean ground and pound. He moves into side control after cutting Mills up. MacDonald sets up the mounted crucifix. Mills survives, but MacDonald is holding him in side control with a minute to go, drawing more blood with ground and pound as he tries to improve position. MacDonald to full mount with thirty seconds left. A torrent of ground and pound prompts Mills to roll; MacDonald is all over him, wailing away in every position. Mills’ cheekbone is busted up something mean.

Round 2: Mills is lumped up, but active on the feet. MacDonald drops for the single and gets it with ease, firing off ground and pound seamlessly. MacDonald into side control immediately. Four minutes to go and Mills is in a bad way. MacDonald takes the back as Mills rolls. MacDonald teeing off with absolutely vicious ground and pound; Mills tries to survive, but the stoppage is forced in short order.

Jon Jones vs. Rashad Evans

For the UFC light heavyweight championship

Evans heads to the ring to the strains of Immortal Technique’s “Point of No Return”. Jones is booed as he walks out to a remix of “The Champ Is Here.” Tonight’s long-awaited main event will be refereed by Herb Dean.

Round 1: Both men begin in the crouching position. Evans with his back to the fence, Jones working kicks. Jones gets in a knee after catching Evans off balance. Jones holding the center of the cage. Jones tries a jumping side kick to the knee. Evans with a quick combination as Jones closes the distance. Jones with a head kick that’s barely blocked. Jones loosening up with kicks, keeping Evans at bay. Halfway point of the fight. Jones hits Evans with a stiff left elbow. Jones has established his reach well so far. Good leg kick for Evans. Jones with a jumping body kick. Jones doubles up on left body kicks. Evans lands a head kick that hurts Jones. Evans relaxed, doesn’t chase him.

Round 2: They clinch, Evans with a knee. Jones breaks with a left hook. Jones with a leg kick. Another. A tentative pace from both men. Jones comes after Evans and Evans taunts him after stepping free. Evans threatens with the takedown after avoiding the spinning back kick. Evans with the jab; again. Evans goes to the body with a right. Again. Jones with a solid elbow. Evans lands a hard leg kick. Jones land another slick elbow. Jones rocks Evans with a left elbow from nowhere. Evans is still on his feet, but that one hurt him badly. They clinch. Less than a minute to go and Evans is still hanging in there. Jones still working that elbow. Jones sticks it again with Evans back to the cage. Evans moving and countering, but Jones is walking him down. Jones tries a flying knee before the bell; he rocks Evans with a left hook before the bell.

Round 3: Evans cracks Jones with an overhand right that puts the champ briefly on his heels. Both men getting in their shots and showing the other respect. Evans guarding his right eye. Evans with a leg kick. Jones controlling the center of the cage; he staggers Evans with a flying knee to the guy and a follow up elbow. Another flying knee for Jones that Evans answers with a right hand. Evans with a left hook. Jones with a slick switch kick to the body. Another leg kick for Rashad. Evans shoots and is quickly denied. Jones shucks him off from the clinch. Evans goes hard to the body. Jones misses with a head kick and spinning back kick.

Round 4: Jones sticking the left hand. It’s a tentative start, with Evans hanging on the outside in Jones’ range. Evans shoots and is denied. Jones isn’t running away with this, but he’s clearly controlling the fight now. Evans with a stiff jab. The crowd is growing resltess as both men stand in front of each other without doing much. Less than two minutes to go. Evans closes the distance and Jones quickly threatens with the choke. He follows it up with several stiff punches. They clinch, and Jones gets in a knee, then several shoulder strikes. Jones shoots for the takedown at the bell and Evans stuffs it.

Round 5: Jones sticks the left hand. Evans with a hard leg kick. Jones still keeping control of the center, though Evans is trying to score with big punches. Jones nails Evans with a right straight. Jones with a Superman punch followed by a front kick. Evans tries for a spinning back fist and misses by a mile. Jones putting on some pressure, but they end up in the clinch with the crowd booing. Less than two minutes to go and neither man has done much of consequence in this round. The crowd is booing loudly as they clinch with less than two minutes to go. Jones tosses Evans to the mat with ease and follows him down with some hard elbows. Evans is quick to his feet and back in the clinch. Thirty seconds to go and they finally break. Jones pulls guard at the end of the round.
