MMAWeekly reports that Jon Fitch will serve as Aaron Simpson’s first welterweight opponent, likely at UFC 149 this summer.
Having spent the majority of his career at middleweight, a split decision loss to Ronny Markes earlier this year has prompted Aaron “A-Train” Simpson (11-3) to head south to the welterweight division. On a three-fight winning streak prior to meeting Markes in the cage, Simpson’s only other career losses have come against Chris Leben and Mark Muñoz.
A perennial contender at welterweight, Jon Fitch (23-4-1, 1 NC) has hit something of a slump lately. The Purdue Boilermaker followed up a draw against BJ Penn with a first-round knockout loss to surging contender Johny Hendricks. Fitch will need a victory over the Arizona State wrestler to reclaim his status as one of the welterweight divisions top competitors.
Though nothing has been announced officially, it’s rumored that Fitch and Simpson will meet at UFC 149, which is scheduled for July 21 at the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
