Former UFC heavyweight Frank Mir feels like he is the most qualified fighter out there to step in and replace Alistair Overeem for a UFC heavyweight championship match with Junior dos Santos if Overeem fails to obtain his license. UFC 146 takes place May 26 from Las Vegas.
While a guest on Spike TV’s MMA Uncensored Live Thursday night, Mir discussed his current opponent, Cain Velasquez, along with how he would feel if he wasn’t selected as the replacement to face dos Santos.
“As of right now, I’m still training for Cain,” Mir said (thanks to MMAMania.com for transcribing). “I’m like everybody else. I see that, in the background, there’s a possibility Overeem’s not going to be able to make the fight and if that’s the case, I wanna make sure I’m in a position where I can jump in.”
Along with Mir, Velasquez has been mentioned as a replacement, and Mark Hunt has received a push from the social media world to step in. Mir wouldn’t be mad at either fighter if they were selected, but he still feels like he is the best choice.
“Both those guys are great fighers, I would never be mad at them for taking advantage of the situation,” Mir said. “Would I be angry? Of course. I wouldn’t wanna be at my house on the night that’s announced. I would not be a happy individual.”
Mir, and the rest of the MMA world, should know more on April 24 when Overeem steps in front of the Nevada State Athletic Commission in hopes of gaining his fight license.
