UFC light heavyweight No. 1 contender Rashad Evans took a trip to Puerto Rico recently to help promote the sport and the UFC in the country. “Suga” was given a positive reaction by the natives, including boxing legend Felix “Tito” Trinidad.
Evans will meet Jon Jones for the UFC light heavyweight title on April 21 at UFC 145: Jones vs. Evans. The card takes place inside the Philips Arena in Atlanta, Georgia.
Evans, former champion himself, was shocked by how well the Puerto Rico people took to him, and especially pleased to have met Trinidad while on the trip.
“The visit to Puerto Rico was one of the craziest things I’ve done in my UFC career. The fans went crazy, it was so cool to be part of that. I couldn’t believe the response,” Evans said. “I have a lot of regard for ‘Tito’ as a fighter. He’s one of those fighters that I watched growing up and in many ways would try to emulate his style.”
Trinidad, a hero in the country and a former boxing world champion, said, “The truth is, MMA and UFC is something that’s taking over the world and we love it in Puerto Rico. We love fighting and love watching UFC events.”
