Gian Villante will return to action next month, taking on Derrick Mehmen at Strikeforce: Barnett vs. Cormier. The card takes place May 19 from the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California.
Villante told Newsday he had agreed to the fight earlier this week. The main event of the card, which will be televised by Showtime, will feature Josh Barnett and Daniel Cormier in the finals of the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix. The prelims, where Villante-Mehmen is likely headed, will be televised by Showtime Extreme.
Villante (9-3) has gone 2-2 in his four Strikeforce bouts, winning his last two after defeats at the hands of Chad Griggs and Lorenz Larkin. He is a former football and wrestling standout at Hofstra University.
Mehmen (12-4) made his Strikeforce debut with a victory over Roy Jones last year. He was defeated by former UFC fighter Rodney Wallace over the weekend at WMMA: McCorkle vs. Heden.
