On the same night Cain Velasquez will tangle with Frank Mir to decide the number one heavyweight contender, a battle will be waged over that division’s championship belt.
Current champion Junior dos Santos, the man who supplanted Velasquez on the throne, will square off with Dutch behemoth Alistair Overeem in a match Velasquez will accordingly have his eye on. Speaking with MMAInterviews’ Spencer Lazara this week, Velasquez broke down the fight as he sees it:
The dos Santos and Overeem fight, that’s a super-hard one to choose, you know? I think, in the distance, Overeem with his long kicks and in the clinch with his knees, he’s dangerous there. But dos Santos in the punching range, I mean man, nobody has been able to test him, really. It’s gonna be interesting to see, but I would definitely love to fight him again but all my focus right now is on Frank Mir.
They both have pretty good takedowns. I’ve seen Overeem do some takedowns and he has good technique, good power. And then I’ve seen dos Santos, in the later rounds, get takedowns on guys too. So, it’s gonna be interesting to see who tries one first, because they both have pretty good takedowns.
