The UFC has announced that Thiago Tavares is injured and will be unable to compete against Tony Ferguson at UFC on FOX 3; Michael Johnson has been tabbed as his replacement.
The opponent switch is the second to happen to Ferguson for this bout, as he was originally scheduled to face Dennis Hallman, who was injured and replaced by Tavares.
Michael “The Menace” Johnson (10-6) was beaten by Jonathan Brookins in the finals match of The Ultimate Fighter 12 and has gone 2-1 in the Octagon since. The 25-year-old bookended a submission defeat to Paul Sass with a TKO win over Edward Faaloloto and a unanimous decision over Shane Roller. He most recently appeared in action against Roller at UFC on FOX 2 this past January.
Tony “El Cucuy” Ferguson (13-2) had better luck during his run on TUF, knocking out Ramsey Nijem to win the thirteenth installment of the series. He has remained unbeaten in the Octagon from there, having taken out veterans Aaron Riley and Yves Edwards in the promotion. His latest fight came at The Ultimate Fighter 14 Finale in December, where he took a unanimous decision over Edwards.
UFC on FOX 3 is slated to take place on May 5 at the IZOD Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey and will be headlined by a lightweight tilt between Nate Diaz and Jim Miller.
