In news initially reported by Ron Kruck and confirmed by MMAFighting, the six heavyweight fighters who appeared at the UFC 146 press conference yesterday were asked to submit to surprise drug testing by the Nevada State Athletic Commission.
Junior dos Santos, Alistair Overeem, Frank Mir, Cain Velasquez, Roy Nelson and Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva were all tested by the NSAC, who only recently got the budget add-on to perform out-of-competition testing.
This is the first instance in NSAC history that drug testing has been conducted for a mixed martial arts event so far out from the actual date of the fights. Silva is the only fighter amongst the group to have tested positive for a banned substance in the past.
UFC 146 is scheduled to take place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on May 26 and will feature an all-heavyweight main card — provided no one get injured before the date or return positive results on this latest round of testing.
