Alistair Overeem: My K-1 Experience Will Come In Handy Against JDS

The UFC 146 main event will see two of MMA’s best heavyweight strikers square off to dispute the UFC heavyweight title.

Brazilian bomber Junior dos Santos, a boxing stylist, will attempt to make his first defense against seasoned veteran and K-1 champion Alistair Overeem. Having competed multiple times in K-1 — the highest level striking competition in the world — and recently capturing the belt in that promotion, Overeem is confident that his skills and experience will match up well against dos Santos’.

“I definitely see him as the best striker — the best boxer in MMA, UFC these days,” Overeem said at the UFC 146 press conference yesterday. “How he stacks up against me, we’ll just have to wait and see. I give myself a good chance.

“Well, K-1 is slightly different (than MMA) because it’s kickboxing, there’s no ground involved,” he added later when asked if his K-1 pedigree will make the difference. “The gloves are a little bit bigger, but I definitely do think that that experience is going to come in handy in this fight.”

UFC 146 goes down on May 26 from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
