To give you an idea of Jon Jones’ immense success, one of the first questions asked at yesterday’s UFC 146 announcement press conference was about the UFC light heavyweight champion’s prospects at heavyweight.
Alistair Overeem — who will challenge for the heavyweight title at UFC 146 — is one of the most notable fighters to have moved from light heavyweight to heavyweight and been met with success. So, given the hulking Dutchman’s experience in that specific area, The Reem fielded the question of whether or not Jones could have a future in the heavyweight division.
“Well, I believe Jon Jones is already walking around at 220. So was I,” said Overeem. “So, I think if he has the proper diet and the right training, why not?”
Jones is currently on deck to face his chief rival, Rashad Evans, in the third defense of his title on April 21 at UFC 145 in Atlanta.
Overeem will take on UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos in the main event of UFC 146, which will take place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on May 26.
