Cain Velasquez had not tasted defeat since 2005 at the wrestling national tournament when Junior dos Santos knocked him out this past November to capture the UFC heavyweight title.
Vealsquez has been on the sidelines since recovering from injury and shoring up the holes in his game. The former champ is set to take on another former champ in Frank Mir this May at UFC 146 and, at yesterday’s presser held to announce the event, Velasquez spoke about coming back from defeat.
“Not difficult, no,” Velasquez replied when asked if it’s been hard to regain his confidence in the gym. “I mean, love what I do, you know? It’s just like in wrestling, if you have a loss, it’s not the end of the world. You have to come back stronger, be healthy, just watch film, just see what you did wrong and learn from your mistakes. That’s the only thing you can do, you can’t really dwell on that kind of stuff. Just kinda move on forward and try to get better.”
As far as what he can do to avoid what happened against dos Santos in the future, Velasquez said that he simply needs to pull the trigger quicker next time.
“Yeah, just to implement the gameplan sooner,” he said. “I kinda hesitated a little bit on that and Junior just capitalized on that. Just learn from that, yeah.”
Velasquez and Mir will meet in the co-main event of UFC 146, which is scheduled for May 26 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
