This May 26, the UFC will host an all-heavyweight main card at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas with UFC 146: Dos Santos vs. Overeem.
Today, the promotion held a press conference to officially announce the event, featuring UFC president Dana White, as well as UFC 146 fighters Junior dos Santos, Alistair Overeem, Cain Velasquez, Frank Mir, Roy Nelson and Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva. (Mark Hunt, Stefan Struve, Gabriel Gonzaga and Shane del Rosario will also compete on the main card).
The following are notes and quotes from the press conference.
-When asked if Jon Jones could fight at heavyweight in the future, Overeem says that Jones walks around at a weight that he used to, so he thinks that a future at heavyweight is definitely a possibility.
-Brushing off the Facebook contest he started, Nelson doesn’t sound like he intends to drop to light heavyweight anytime soon. Says he’ll take the Randy Couture route and fight light heavyweight just before retirement.
-Dana says this fight card is about more than just heavyweights, it’s about top-tier fighters. Dana is asked why there is such an allure to the heavyweight division and the fighters explain, in varying terms, that it’s because the heavyweights are big, powerful and finish fights.
-Mir discusses finding the optimal size to compete at and says that he’s happy and feels best when he fights a little lighter than when he bulked up for Brock Lesnar and Shane Carwin.
-“I definitely see him as the best… boxer in MMA today.” – Overeem on dos Santos’ striking. Indicates that his own high-level striking will measure up to dos Santos’.
-Mir admits that wrestling is one of his biggest weaknesses and that he’s worried about it from Velasquez, but has been working very hard to improve in that area.
-“Every athlete dreams of being in the best organization and I’m here now in the best MMA organization.” – Bigfoot Silva, says he will train his hardest to put on good shows for the promotion and fans.
-Bigfoot Silva discusses leaving the Blackzilians when they brought Overeem in, explains that he left because of the possibility of facing Overeem down the line.
-Velasquez on whether or not returning from a loss has been difficult: “Not difficult no. I love what I do and it’s just like in wrestling: you have a loss, it’s not the end of the world.”
-Dana White’s take: Roy Nelson – Amazing chin, amazing heart. Cain Velasquez – Well-rounded, incredibly talented. Junior dos Santos – Knockout artist. Alistair Overeem – Probably one of the greatest kickboxers, Muay Thai stylists. Frank Mir – This guy breaks stuff; probably the best heavyweight submission artist ever. Antonio Silva- This guy is on a mission, he wants that belt.
-Overeem says the difference between The Blackzilians and Golden Glory is “more blacks, more Brazilians,” his new team has everything (wrestling, grappling, etc.) in house, while he had to fly in everything but K-1 level strikers to Golden Glory. Says he only flew in K-1 level strikers for this camp.
