Three fights with one opponent would be more than enough for most fighters. However, Gray Maynard isn’t satisfied with his trilogy vs. Frankie Edgar.
Maynard, who has an upcoming bout with Clay Guida set for UFC on FX 4 on June 22, is hoping to settle the score with Edgar down the road. Each owns a victory over the other, while they also battled to a draw. It was “The Answer” that scored the biggest win, earning a victory last year to retain the UFC lightweight title.
“I would love to have the belt and somewhere along the line, get another fight with Edgar,” said Maynard, in a recent interview with Heavy.com. “We are 1-1-1 and we need to settle it once and for all. It has to happen eventually, and after that fight, we can both be done. We can walk away knowing it’s over and that we gave MMA fans some great fights to look back on.”
As for his current opponent, Maynard is working hard to figure out a plan of attack for Guida. He knows “The Carpenter” will go full-speed ahead for five rounds.
“Guida has good takedowns, but I feel that is my area and what he lacks as a true athlete he makes up for in heart and toughness,” Maynard said. “Clay is well known for his cardio, but he also likes to mix it up and throw hands. He has a good chin, great heart and it’s a fun fight.”
