Andy Nguyen for ChokeOut Cancer recently caught up with American Kickboxing Academy head coach Javier Mendez to get a status report on the gym (minus any news on Josh Koscheck), as well as on some of AKA’s upcoming fights and new fighters.
On the subject of AKA heavyweight Cain Velasquez’s impending number one contender bout against Frank Mir, Mendez expressed gratitude to the UFC for putting Velasquez so close to a title shot following a title-relinquishing loss to Junior dos Santos and explained that the AKA team has their work cut out for them in preparing Velasquez to face Mir.
“I wanna thank the UFC for giving us the number one contendership on his first fight back from his loss Junior,” said Mendez. “It’s a great honor that they believe in Cain like that. It’s a great challenge for us; Frank is great on the ground, he’s got great stand up and all around it’s a great fight for us.”
Velasquez and Mir will tangle in the co-main event of the all-heavyweight UFC 146 fight card, which is slated to take place May 26 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
