At a press conference held this week to officially announce the UFC 149 fight card in Calgary, UFC president Dana White revealed that Jose Aldo (21-1) will defend his belt at the top of the event.
Though Aldo has been locked down for the position, the Brazilian dynamo has not yet been assigned an opponent for his title defense.
Presently, it’s being speculated that the 25-year-old champion will meet either the winner of the UFC on FUEL TV 3 featherweight tilt between Dustin Poirier and Chan Sung Jung, or top Japanese 145er Hatsu Hioki, who’s fresh off of a strong showing over Bart Palaszewski at UFC 144.
The UFC had attempted separately to persuade top lightweights Frankie Edgar and Anthony Pettis to drop a weight class, but neither man opted to vacate their division.
Aldo is unbeaten in fourteen straight fights, five of which have been title defenses.
UFC 149 will take place on July 21 from the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
